My Kuantan Trip

October 17th, 2005 by kamkuey

It was nice. Did not do any sun bathing, but still nice. At least I still get the salty air and sound of waves.

I got my brother to send to me to the meeting point, Hyatt Saujana in Subang. Mistake. I forgot that I could park my car there, and when I come back, just get back into my car and drive home. Anyways, When I got there, the Honda crew were busy prepping the new Honda City. A nice sumptous breakfast also awaits me. hehehe.

After a nice breakfast, the Japs presented to us the latest additions and improvements of the new City. Quite impressive. Some of the improvements, many will not get to see or appreciate. Besides the obvious headlights and rear lights changes, they have extended both the front and rear. The suspensions have also been retuned and some changes in the engine bay plus a more efficient exhaust system.

Then we were off!! We were teamed up in teams of 3 or 4 per car. Two other journalist plus myself got the I-DSI version all the way up to Kuantan. But first.. the mandatory group shot..

The MD of Honda Malaysia on the left, and some big shot in the R&D department from Japan on the right.

The I-DSI version did not have much changes to its interior, except for fake wood panels and the trip metre has got the new KM/L reading. I cannot say that I could feel an improvement in performance, but handling did improve. We had our designated driver change spots as well as the halfway check point where our car was checked and… get this… cleaned.

We were greeted by the Honda crew at the Hyatt Kuantan and were assigned to our respective rooms. After a quick freshining up, we had a nice 8-course lunch. Free and easy until dinner time.

The view from my room? Very nice. I had a balcony which overlooks the beach.

We had a technical discussion. And let me tell you, the japs are indeed very passionate about their work. Aparently, over dinner, someone mentioned that the car had some problems with crosswinds. Two of the japs took a car and headed on down to the alleged stretch of road to experience it for themselves. And mind you, that stretch is not like a 5 minutes drive away. It is more like and hour and a half.

And get this… the senior guy, probably the top guy in Honda R&D, after having difficulty convincin us on some subject, got up, walked to the whiteboard and started sketching the discussed area. Fuhyor!!! Go ask any big boss and see if they know how to draw technical drawings. My boss knows his stuff, but if you ask him to sketch out a ROW drawing of a highway, he would be drawing up cartoons.

We were treated to a very nice pool-side BBQ dinner on the last night. There were also entertainment where Saito San did the jiggy with the performer.
