Faces of Death

September 19th, 2006 by kamkuey

I remember during my school days, that some frens of mine and myself would seek out the many different parts of the documentary : Faces of Death. This documentary shows countless deaths captured on video. From executions to animal maulings to automotive accidents to suicides. The images are truely gruesome. Not only do you see severed limbs, you see how it was torn off the body. I remember there is this one video showing a cult sacrificing a human being. The clip shows a live human being beheaded. Not the samurai one chop slice off whole head kind of beheading, but more like slaugthering, using a small knife to slice through the neck.. while the victim is still gasping for air.

After a while, I do not find the urge to seek out these videos anymore. Mainly because the scenes kept playing in my mind over and over and over again, even until today. And it is not pretty.

Fast forward to when I first started working. There was this one project where I needed to compile a list of incidents/accidents along a privatised highway and map them against a digital map so as to identify hot spots. So there were this pile of reports, complete with detailed photograph of the accident site, vehicles and victims.

Fast Forward till current day. Working at this centre which has got hundreds of cameras all around KL, I get to see many incidents. Some of them are minor fender benders while some are just gruesome. So it is back to Faces of Death. Only this time, it is closer to home. But the good news is that I do not have to scrutinise the pictures this time :P
